Thomas Sugrue was born in Naugatuck, Connecticut, in 1907. He graduated from Washington and Lee University where Hugh Lynn Cayce, Edgar Cayce’s son, was his roommate.
Following a year of graduate work, he became a reporter – first in his hometown and then for the New York Herald Tribune. In 1934, Sugrue joined the staff of The American Magazine to write features on world travel. He married Margaret Ganey and had one daughter.
Sugrue wrote fiction and poetry as well as nonfiction. In 1940 his novel, Such Is the Kingdom, was published, followed later by Starling of the White House (1946). In 1939 he was struck with a disease which left him partially paralyzed and with little chance of survival. After a short stay in Florida, in June of that year Sugrue moved into Edgar and Gertrude Cayce's home. He lived with the Cayces for two years, gathering material to write There is a River – The Story of Edgar Cayce.
Sugrue wrote eight books in total, including The Crowning of Technocracy, with John Lardner (1933); Such Is the Kingdom (1940); There Is a River (1942); Starling of the White House (1946); We Called It Music: The Story of Eddie Condon, with Eddie Condon (1947); Stranger in the Earth (1948); Watch for the Morning (1950); A Catholic Speaks His Mind (1951). He also hosted the Conversations at Eight radio program, based in New York City. He died in 1953.
In a letter dated July 15, 1954, Hugh Lynn Cayce announced the establishment of the Thomas Sugrue Memorial Library at Wainwright House, in Rye, New York with a collection of Sugrue's works.
