Biographical / Historical
Reverend Harmon Hartzell Bro was born on December 14, 1919 in Nanjing, Jiangsu, China to missionaries Albin Carl Bro (1893-1956) and Margueritte Harmon Bro (1894-1977). He studied at Williams College, received a bachelor's degree from the University of Chicago, pursued graduate education at St. Olaf College, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of Chicago Divinity School (Ph.D., Philosophy of Religions). He was ordained a minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) in 1943.
His academic work focused on aspects of religious life, including meditation, faith-healing, mystical experience, and conversion.
Bro served as associate professor of religion and psychology, George Williams College, Chicago, Illinois (1949-55), and held various academic positions and developed experimental programs. He was W. Earl Ledden Associate Professor of Religion and director of Institute for Religious Education at Syracuse University, New York (1956-59) and director of the Institute for Research in Psychology and Religion (1960-65).
He married Reverend June Avis Larson Bro (1920-2019) in Chicago on June 14, 1943 and had five children together. They founded the Pilgrim Institute for study of contemporary religious and spiritual practice.
Bro also served as associate pastor at Park Ridge Community Church in the early 1980s.
He met Edgar Cayce in 1943 after his mother Margueritte published articles on Cayce's work in Coronet Magazine and Christian Century. Harmon and June traveled to Virginia Beach and worked for the Association for Research and Enlightenment. They remained connected with the A.R.E. as members and speakers.
Harmon Bro's doctoral thesis, "The Charisma of the Seer," centered on Edgar Cayce's psychic work. Bro's published works include Edgar Cayce on Dreams (1968), Dreams in a Life of Prayer: The Approach of Edgar Cayce (1970), Edgar Cayce on Religion and Psychic Experience (1970), and A Seer Out of Season: The Life of Edgar Cayce (1989).
Bro died on September 13, 1997, in Hyannis, Massachusetts.
