Biographical / Historical

The Cayce Family of Hopkinsville, Ky., included Edgar Cayce (1877-1945), known as the "sleeping prophet," the "father of holistic medicine," and the most documented psychic of the 20th century; his wife, Gertrude Evans Cayce (1880-1945), who supported her husband's work and served as the conductor for his readings; Edgar Cayce's father, Leslie Burr Cayce (1853-1937); and the children of Edgar and Gertrude, Hugh Lynn (1907-1982), manager of the Association for Research and Enlightenment, established in 1931, and Edgar Evans (1918-2013), electrical engineer and author. Hugh Lynn and Sally Cayce's son, Charles Thomas Cayce (1942-2016) received his Ph.D. in child psychology in 1968. He taught college and worked for the U.S. State Department abroad before returning to Virginia Beach and joining the A.R.E. staff. He became president of the Association for Research and Enlightenment in 1977 and served as president for 29 years until he retired in 2006.
